Photo First {Family Photos}

I like to call myself a photography hobbyist. My husband might categorize it as less a hobby and more of an obsession.  Photography is an easy way for me to flex creative muscles and attempt to see the world in a unique way.  As a hobbyist I rarely have willing (or moving) subjects. I tend to snap pictures of sprawling landscapes, pouting nephews, and sad leaves.  Most people pictures are taken at family events, and taken of unknowing or unwilling subjects.

Over Thanksgiving my sister-in-law asked if I could take some family photos of her family.  She must have seen my previous work of sad leaves. Without thinking about the challenges of an all adult family photography session, I immediately responded with "absolutely!" I suggested we go to a park.  I live in Florida.  This is a completely sane suggestion in Florida. It was less smart in The Mitten.  The Saturday after Thanksgiving had a high temperature in the upper 20s.  I had many things going against me for my first attempt at a family photo session.  Despite all the challenges of the day, I felt like the photos were a big success. Even better her mother loved the photos.  While I don't plan on giving up my sad leaf photos anytime soon, I must admit I had fun during a structured photo shoot.
